History

Aerial view of the Cape Hatteras LighthouseThe Lighthouse View was established in the mid-fifties by John E. Hooper on long-held family property in the village of Buxton, N.C. With its prime oceanfront location, the Lighthouse View catered to vacationers who were eager to discover the country’s first national seashore—Cape Hatteras—with its unblemished beaches and dunes, quaint fishing villages, and historic lighthouses. The addition of the Bonner Bridge in 1968 made the island even more accessible, drawing more and more vacationers who not only enjoy the beaches, villages, and history of the island, but also love surf fishing, surf boarding, and windsurfing, too.

Since its inception, the Lighthouse View has remained in the Hooper family, passed on to son, Edgar, and now grandson, John, who got involved in the family business in mid-eighties. Over the years it has grown from four units to more than 85, with everything from motel accommodations to four-bedroom beach cottages.

Each generation has operated this unique vacation destination with the same philosophy: to provide families and friends with quality accommodations, a lifetime of family vacation memories, and the ultimate beach access—all with in view of the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the nation’s tallest and most recognized brick lighthouse.
