The 100-mile course is actually 101.5 miles point-to-point Cutoff: 30-Hours. 

Runners will travel the entire length of paved highway on Bodie Island and Hatteras Island viewing much of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore via historic Hwy 12. Runners will see beautiful landscapes including 3 of the famous North Carolina Lighthouses. Runners will cross the 2.5 mi. long Bonner Bridge spanning Oregon Inlet between Bodie Island and Hatteras Island at the 50mi. point between noon and sunset.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Opens


The first day is a fee free day!

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse climbing hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily in the spring and fall, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., May 22 through Labor Day, Monday, September 7.  Ticket sales for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse begin at 8:15 a.m. daily and close at 4:30 p.m. in the spring and fall, and at 5:30 p.m. May 22 through Labor Day. 

Climbing tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for senior citizens (62 or older), children 11 years of age and under, and those holding a National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Access Pass.  Tickets are available on a first come/first served basis and can only be purchased in-person at the site the day of the climb.  There are no advance ticket sales. 

Children must be at least 42” tall, and children under 12 must be escorted by a person at least 16 years old. Climbing the lighthouses is strenuous climbing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is equivalent to climbing a 12-story building.

First Flight 5K & Flying Pirate Half Marathon

The Flying Pirate Half Marathon course winds its way through the natural beauty that is North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Run the 13.1 miles and cover some spectacular ground - 2015 is the 6th Anniversary of this fun filled Pirate themed half marathon! Come to the Outer Banks and join the Pirate's for this fantastic race! Begin in Kitty Hawk and follow the course into Nags Head, along the Albemarle Sound, around the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and through the Nags Head Woods Maritime Forest. Finish with a Pirate Jamboree in Nags Head!

On Saturday run the First Flight 5K on the NPS grounds of the Wright Brothers Memorial! Fun for everyone includes Finisher medals, event shirts, SWAG & Pirate Jamboree on Sunday! Come fly with the Pirates!
