The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed Highway 12 from the Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe due to several areas of moderate to severe ocean overwash. NCDOT warns motorists along the Outer Banks to expect portions of N.C. 12 to be closed for extended periods during high tide cycles over the next few days as a strong weather system lingers off the Atlantic coast.
Crews will be working diligently to clear the roadway when conditions permit, but each high tide cycle brings ocean overwash and sand back onto the highway.
Even when open, motorists should proceed with extreme caution and never drive into floodwaters. Additional dune breaches are present at the usual "hot spots" including Oceanview Drive in Avon and at the north end of Buxton.
Forecasters expect the system to move offshore Saturday into Sunday.
If you have plans to travel to Hatteras Island this weekend, please monitor NCDOT's website and facebook page for accurate and current road conditions and closures. We are communicating with current and arriving guests to ensure they are aware of the conditions on the island.
